- Your Smile
Hard to believe, right?
Well keep reading, because we cite the research and go into detail how you can control the signals you send to others!
The Research on Facial Expressions and Intelligence
Facial Expressions matter – just ask Karel Kleisner from Charles University in the Czech Republic who in 2014 conducted research that showed the intelligence level of men can be reliably judged by their facial expressions.
The strange thing was that the scientific data did not have the same result for women – apparently the intelligence level of women cannot be reliably be determined by their facial expression.
The findings also had no relevance to facial shape and the only reliable indicator was facial expressions.
How This Study on Facial Expressions Was Conducted
The researchers had hundreds of students look at different facial expressions and try and determine the person in the photo's intelligence.
The students were repeatedly and consistently able to tell how intelligent the subject in the photos were based on their natural facial expression in the photos.
What This Means For You ?
People determine your intelligence level based off the facial expressions you use daily.
What Can You Do About It?
Changing your facial expressions is a lot harder than changing your clothing or sense of style. With your clothing you can work with a stylist and in 1 day have your wardrobe and appearance transformed by simply spending some money.
Our facial expressions are based off of habits, quirks and gestures we employ every day.
The bad thing about this is that changing this behavior will be a lot harder because for the most part we do it subconsciously.
The good thing about it is that if you can master this skill you can start to look more intelligent.
4 Tips On How To Use Facial Expressions To Look More Intelligent
1. Open Your Eyes Wider And Raise Your Brow
No I'm not talking about Botox or surgery but about fully opening your eyes when speaking to and engaging with people.
We're also not talking about wide-eyed crazy eyes but enough that you're not squinting when you talk to people. This means you have to be cautious about talking to someone in the sun so you're not being perceived as less intelligent because the sun is in your eyes.
You may be a smart guy – as in Nobel Prize smart – but you can be pre-judged as being less intelligent by something as simple as squinting in the sun and that's the type of negative pre-judgement no one needs.
For this reason if you're outside and the sun is shining while you're speaking to people you should seriously consider wearing sunglasses. Sunglasses will neutralize the overall effect of appearing intelligent but that's better than having people form a negative opinion on you.
Open your eyes, raise your brow and cut down on that frown you love.
2. Relax Your Jaw To Look Smarter
A lot of us gentlemen have a bad habit tightening our jaws.
This can be due to stress or anger and it may even be something you do consciously because you think it makes you look more manly.
You may even suffer from a condition called bruxism which is essentially grinding your teeth subconsciously. It's estimated that 40% of sufferers are unaware they do it.
Aside from making you appear less intelligent this can also lead to painful jaw muscles, headaches and damaged teeth.
This research shows that whatever your reasons for clenching your jaw you should stop. Practice relaxing your jaw if you find you have this bad habit.
There are some exercises you can do to help you overcome this problem have a look at this article on Bruxism exercises.
3. Keep Your Chin Up To Be Perceived as Intelligent
To do this you have to make sure you don't scrunch down with your shoulders and that you don't look up at people with your chin down.
If you're a relatively short man there may not be much you can do except to perhaps stand a bit further away to reduce the angle or to try and have important conversations seated.
If you're bit taller or of medium height you have no excuse and you should simply make sure of the angle or your chin and face when you're interacting with people.
When you bring your chin up a bit more it serves to elongate your face and changes the angle in which most people are looking at you.
All of sudden many people are going to be looking at your face in a more elongated shape which will serve to change your facial expression to be something considered more intelligent.
4. Smile & Be More Likeable……Therefore More Intelligent?
Smiling makes you come off as more likeable and therefore more intelligent.
With smiling the benefits don't end there. When we smile it's not only the people around us that register this but our own brains pick up on the fact.
This creates a positive feedback loop in you brain where you tell your brain you're happy by smiling and your brain tells you to smile because you're happy.
In the meantime several processes are going on in your brain that helps reduce stress and can even increase your confidence levels.
