16 Stylish Men’s Hats | Hat Style Guide | Man’s Headwear Infographic

hat-types-small-rmrsThe hat.

A classic menswear piece that has fallen out of style over the last 50 years.

That’s too bad.  Why?

Well hats are:

1) Functional.

A hat protects you from the elements, make you look taller, send a visual message of societal position, and cover imperfections of the upper head.  It works to help you feel and look better!

2) Timelessly stylish.

For thousands of years they have been the calling card of the type of men who wore them.  Can you imagine a cowboy without his hat?  What about a Marine without his cover?  A Greek fisherman without his wool cap?  A Russian without his Ushanka?

In this classic men’s hat infographic I expose you to 16 class men’s headwear pieces you should consider adding to your wardrobe.

You’ll find variations of all these across the globe – find the few that suit your needs and wear with confidence!

I’ve been wearing hats, versus caps, for over thirty year. It started with practicality, I lived in the city and needed to drive and didn’t have a garage. Going to the car with a wet head after a morning shower seemed to always get me a cold, so I bought a good fedora. I was working as an accountant at the time, so it was kind of a pimp on the Price Waterhouse image, I also rode a motorcycle to work in the summer, then I wore a Bell open-face, so kind of a double pimp.
Since then I continue to wear a version of a fedora, some times maybe a tribly, when ever I am outside in the winter. I also have for the past many years worn a fedora while playing platform tennis, a winter version of tennis. The felt fedora is warm, it stays on, and draws my opponents shots to me (they want to knock it off) so I don’t have to move as much!
Currently I have maybe four winter hats, and a few straw for summer. Although very expensive Paul Stewart make a nice hat. I have two, a fine grey fedora, and a softer crushable tribly for everyday use and travel. I also have a couple of felt fedoras, one forest one navy for paddle and other everyday.
As silly as it sound, I have worn fedora hats for so long that I forgot a basic element of their functionality. My wife and I went recently out on rainy Friday night for a casual visit to friends, and decided to wear matching baseball caps from our daughter’s university. Surprise, water would run down the neck of my Barber jacket! That would not happen with a fedora!

I have found that when wearing a nice hat people look twice at you. I stylish hat completes most outfits if matched well with its colour and material and is as important as a pocket square when out and about.

So when should a hat be worn, when should it be removed, when should it be left at home?

I have 7 hats with wide brims, which I love, but the biggest problem is where to store them as hats take up so much room. I seem to keep most of them in ill fitting boxes which are too small or too big which makes the situation worse.

You really are a lover of Fedoras! I wouldn’t blame you, though. They are fantastic!

Good question. I’ll reveal the answer in an upcoming video! :)

Well, no beach plans, but I do have a hat I wear for hiking. I am interested in a more professional summer hat. Maybe I should consider a Panama.

    Many thanks!

I like flat caps and have several. They keep my head warm and dry, are less likely to blow off in our Kansas winds, and go well with any outer wear I have, from sport coats to field jackets. Being tall, I also like not having to take them off when I get in the truck.
I was not quite 9 when JFK took office, so I have some memory of fedoras. I like them, but we aren’t in the ’50s anymore and there’s a line – somewhere – between doing my best and drawing attention to myself.
I have a small collection of ball caps representing various parts of the trucking industry. None of them are as comfortable or functional as my BDU cap (left from my time in the Air Force), and it’s built/shaped more like a painter’s cap than a ball cap.

I’m totally late to the party – but wanted to say that I’ve totally had the thought “I wish I did not wear a hat today”… mostly only very, very windy days because I’m afraid of losing the hat and I love them all so very much.

It’s all in knowing how to navigate. Head down into the wind and shove on man!

How should a flat cap fit? How much of your head is it supposed to cover?
