The Walking Dead.Â
You know the show right?
It's only the most popular show on television.
Who doesn't like zombie apocalypse tv?
But what does style have to do with it?
Well – Glen from the walking dead falls into a unique category.
The rugged, high-contrast style.
Men whose hair color greatly contrasts their skin color fall under this category:
- Men with fair or light skin and dark brown or black hair. Green or blue eyes enhance a high contrast complexion.
- Most men of Asian heritage have high contrast complexions, as do men of Irish decent, characterized by black hair, pale skin and blue/green/dark brown eyes.
- Dark complected men fit into this category because almost any color next to dark skin provides a large amount of contrast.
- Older dark complected men with white hair.
When you’re a high-contrast type, you complement your features the most by wearing high-contrast outfits. In other words, mimic the contrast between your hair and skin color with a high-contrast color combination of your clothes.
This is Episode 3 of my Celebrity Style Inspiration series. Â I collaborated with Celebrity Menswear Stylist Ashley Weston, who is here to help the audience at RMRS select casual outfits for high-contrast men.
The outfits are inspired by Steven Yeun's character, Glenn Rhee (from AMC's horror drama, ‘The Walking Dead').Â

Steven Yeun's Outfit From The Walking Dead
A rugged look that looks great on every guy regardless of age and body type.
Steven Yeun's high-contrasting clothes are a perfect complement to his high-contrasting features. They create a frame around his face, drawing your gaze to its center.
The easiest way to create a high-contrast outfit is by pairing light colored clothing with darker clothes. Another great way to create contrast within your outfit is by wearing complementary colors. Use both these tips to create the first casual outfit as mentioned in the video above.
#1Â Light Heather Gray Henley Shirt
The Henley is a classic alternative to the t-shirt.
A henley is a collarless shirt with 1-5 buttons on a placket in the front.
Why a henley?
The v-cut in the front can send a signal of masculine sexuality. Make sure that your shirt is slim to avoid looking top heavy. Only buy henleys that have a good, close fit.
Avoid wearing tops that are going to visually oppose your skin color. Dark colors will overpower your pale skin. Gray is a better option for its neutrality in terms of clash and matching. A little more moderate than black or white in terms of contrast, a gray henley top goes with just about anything.Â
Brighter colors stand out best against gray, which gives you the option for deeper colors as a trouser base.
Henleys layer well, and as you will see below, this top is better when worn under a utility style jacket.
As a casual style, the henley mimics the laid-back culture of a t-shirt while reflecting some of a collared shirt's structure.
#2 Navy Chino Pants
Chinos are great for pulling off a casual look.
These trousers bridge the gap between a smart and casual look, and when they’re in a versatile colour like blue they’re easy to merge with a range of items to create a stylish outfit.
A pair of slim fit chinos is a good option for most body types and heights and is easy to mix with a range of clothing pieces. Traditional navy blue offers a more subtle look in your casual wear than bold blue.
A straight leg pair of chinos in a bold blue can be matched easily with softer colors like the gray henley top mentioned above. You will maintain a hint of formality with the slim fit of the chinos and still exude a smart casual vibe with the henley top.
Cuff or roll your pants for extra ruggedness.
To keep your outfit balanced, don’t go for chinos that are too slim fit. Especially when pairing them with boots, as you risk the chance of looking a little bottom heavy.
#3 Black or Dark Brown Lace Up Boots
Keep the color focus on your chinos by wearing footwear in a neutral color like black or dark brown.
A rugged pair of lace-up boots are durable and designed to take a beating. Â A timeless classic, these boots transcend trends and can easily be dressed up or down.
Worn with a henley top and navy chinos, these boots add an air of ruggedness while keeping the silhouette minimalist.
Ankle-high, sturdy boots with a Goodyear welted sole is your best option.
#4 Utility Style Jacket
Too much gray on top can suck the life out of your natural complexion.
Your top, trousers, and jacket are the three core items of your outfit.
When you put together clothes, highlight the contrast between your skin and hair by choosing a jacket in a complimentary color to the shirt and trousers combination.
A green military style utility jacket works well with this combination.
#5 Black Leather Band Watch
Round up your casual outfit with a black leather band watch to compliment the color of the boots.
Select a timepiece with a muted silver face to create a nice contrast with the black leather band of the watch.
Complications on the watch, day of the week and date dial, for instance, lends to the casualness of the outfit while still maintaining a smart appearance.
Keep in mind that the level of contrast between the items of your outfit should be the same level of contrast between your skin and your hair.
