Summer Accessories – 7 Must-Haves To Improve Your Style
You’re coordinated. And the sun is out.
But there’s still something missing.
The French call this a certain “je ne sais quoi”.
But if they're stylish, they do know what it is
It's Accessories, gents.
Individually, they may not make a lot of difference, but accessories pull your outfit together. They're essential to completing your look.
The Harvard Study of Communications states that it only takes 7 seconds for you to make a first impression, so you need to make sure your first impression counts.
Gentlemen, it's time to take your summer style to the next level. I’ve created a list of the 7 summer accessories every man must have.

Shades are not only practical, they are also an essential style accessory. Unfortunately, they're often nothing more than a last-minute airport purchase. Put in a bit more effort than that, my friends. It's important to know which sunglasses work for you and your face shape, so take your time, do some research and experiment with different colors and types of sunglasses.
Aviators were originally pilots' glasses and look great on most men. The large lenses complement most face shapes and provide great protection from the sun. They also come in a variety of lens and frame colors.
Another classic is the Wayfarer, which originated in the 1950s, and remains popular today. The Wayfarer has a cool, rectangular frame and isn't going to go out of style any time soon. The iconic Club Master is a variant of this, without the lower frame under the lenses and is perfect if you want to make a statement this summer.
Some things never go out of style. The wristwatch is a case in point. Gentlemen, it's a timeless accessory and the staple-piece of any man’s outfit.
You need a watch that reflects your personality. You need something which is affordable, well-made and able to elevate your style game. Your watch doesn’t just tell the time – your watch tells the world around you what you’re about.
#3. Classic Men's Hats
Gentlemen: it's time to say goodbye to your baseball cap and hello to a more refined look.
The summer is a perfect time to bring back this classic accessory – favored by movie stars like Robert Redford and Paul Newman.
If you're not used to wearing a hat start simple and go for a versatile straw sun hat, which can be worn on a variety of occasions.
Try and find places to wear it (summer parties, outdoor concerts) and it'll soon begin to feel natural. It's important to feel comfortable with what you're wearing so it looks natural on you. And it takes practice.
Start a collection and begin adding to it with different hats. Try and develop your own style, taking time to research different hats and how they work with different outfits.
#4. Belts And Suspenders
We all know what a belt is – it stops your trousers falling down in public. But this highly functional accessory is also one of the most overlooked. Yes, every guy should have a black or brown dress belt – but why not try different colors and materials? Summer is the perfect time of year to experiment with some bolder color and pattern choices for your belt.
As a rule of thumb buy a belt which is 2 or 3 inches bigger than your pants size. If you have a 36” waist, go for a 38-40” inch belt.
If you want to try something a bit different in place of a belt, go for suspenders. (Remember, you don't wear a belt AND suspenders at the same time!). Many men find suspenders more comfortable and they have the added bonus of looking great on the dance floor when you take your jacket off!
Try out different colors and patterns and pair them with your outfit for a fresh summer look.
#5. Cufflinks As Summer Accessories
Cufflinks are a great way to add panache to an outfit. Stick to the tried and tested mantra – Keep It Simple – and utilize them to complement other colors in your outfit. Try and build up a collection over time and experiment with different materials like silk-knot – a stylish way to add color to your outfit and a change from the traditional metal cuff-link.
Here's a great tip – cufflinks are usually paired with French Cuffs but you can take your regular barrel-cuffed shirts to a tailor and have them altered to accommodate cufflinks. This isn't a difficult modification and should be relatively inexpensive.
#6 Men's Summer Fragrance
This is one of my favorite topics and one which is deserving of its own article. There are some fragrances out there which are just perfect for the summer and will instantly lift your mood. As the temperature rises try and go for a light, invigorating fragrance with a citrus twist.
Take some time to experiment with different scents and don't be pushed into buying one you don't like. Remember, this is for you and no one else. Find a fragrance you love and which will last in warmer temperatures – and most of all, remember to have fun experimenting.
Use the summer to break from the norm and mix things up a bit by adding a bit of bling to your outfit. Throughout history, men have worn jewelry to demonstrate power and status.
Bracelets, rings and necklaces are all great ways of taking your summer game to another level and adding an extra dimension to your outfit.
Jewelry can have a very personal meaning, e.g. your wedding ring, or it can be purely decorative. It's also a great conversation piece. Find something that works for you but don't go overboard – as always, the rule to Keep It Simple applies here!
Whatever you wear this summer, this is the perfect season to add some color to your wardrobe. Colors have very powerful subconscious meanings: red is very intense and can indicate courage and confidence. Green is associated with the beauty of nature and yellow is the color of sunshine – associated with joy, happiness, and energy. Blue is always a safe bet for signaling calm and friendliness. If you can master this art, you can use colors to add vibrancy to your summer accessories and really stand out from the crowd.
