Our Heritage

The story of Seiko began in 1881, when a 21 year old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. Just eleven years later, in 1892, he established the 'Seikosha' factory.

ss

Seikosha was founded; started producing wall clocks.

In 1892 Kintaro Hattori bought a disused factory in Tokyo and Seikosha was formed (In Japanese, "Seiko" means "exquisite", "minute" or "success" and "sha" means house). It was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first clocks and these marked the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the important manufacturers of timepieces.

The Legacy Carries On

When, in 1913, Seiko built its first wrist watch, the company’s president called it the Laurel. It was not only a first for Seiko, but also a first for Japan and it was the beginning of a tradition of innovation that resulted directly from Kintaro Hattori’s determination. Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori’s company is still dedicated to the dreams that the founder always strove to achieve.

Perfect watch under $500. Easily serves as a "one-watch" collection. THE "Baby" Grand Seiko.
ABRIDGED REVIEW: (tl;dr)Pros:-- awesome watch. insanely high quality/value for the money.-- great movement (6R15D) with unreal accuracy. runs almost spot-on, off by less than 1 spd.-- beautiful dial, hands, case, and case back. perfect execution.-- perfect size. fits like a dream on the wrist-- strap monster. plays well with all types, colors, and styles of straps. very dynamic watch.Cons:-- replaces the need to have any other watch in your collection. they will collect dust now.-- ruins your expectation(s) for any other watch. other watches don't seem accurate any more. COSC certification is not good enough.-- including oyster bracelet is a let-down. micro-adjust is a joke. replace it with a nice leather or alligator. mine is on a hirsch duke black alligator embossed with an aftermarket butterfly deployment, it looks very elegant and easily looks 10x more expensive-- lume is not that strong, if that's your thing this watch probably isn't right for you-- expect to pay another $300 to $400 to pick up the SARB035 after you own this. you need both of them. trust me.----------------------------------------------FULL REVIEW:The SARB033 is an amazing time-piece. I bought this 2 months ago from Amazon and have been very satisfied with it since. The model I received came with a 6R15D movement in it. Mine arrived NEW, in perfect condition, with PRIME service at a Prime shipping estimate of 2 days. This is my daily-driver and it has been serving me very well, keeping time with impeccable accuracy above and beyond the industry standard for automatic watches, even beating out COSC Swiss certified luxury watches. The last time I set this watch was 3 days ago. I am currently at +1 sec. That's over THREE days. Before that, it was running about 4 seconds fast after 1 MONTH. On a general day-to-day basis it runs spot on. I use the NIST Official U.S. Time posted on time DOT gov to check my times. I am still at a loss of words for how well this automatic piece keeps time. The 6R15 movement is a beast and it's obvious that Seiko does a tremendous job with regulating the watch. To get the 6R15 at this price point ($300 to $400) is an incredible bargain. Newer models will easily cost 2x, maybe 3x that. Just the movement itself retails $150 to $225. It is a quality component.Speaking of quality, the entire watch oozes with quality. The value you get for your money is unreal. Sapphire crystal with tasteful AR coating, highly polished stainless steel applied hour markers which shine like diamonds in certain lights, a truly beautiful and elegant dial that complements the small indices along the inner bevel, a case that compliments the watch perfectly with beautifully designed polished chamfers, gorgeous push-pin crown that operates smoothly with signed crown and nice tactile feed. The date window at the 3 o'clock position is executed flawlessly, using a polished stainless steel border and black background that effortlessly blends with the rest of the dial, one of my favorite features and a nice example of how Seiko really made some great decisions to elevate this watch, even if it meant upgrading the date wheel. The dauphin-style hour and minute hands are a beautiful, classic design that work perfectly. The small, unobtrusive seconds-hand manages to declare its presence but in an understated and tasteful manner, very clearly showing you the seconds marker and adding a little flare to its end piece at the central rotor. It looks like a little sewing needle, reminding you that we are all part of a tapestry from the fabric of time. I love it. There's a tiny dash of lume that's added to the hour/minute hands and the hour markers, adding a small bit of opaque contrast which works very well on this dial, though the overall luminescence is meager at best (and in my opinion not needed for this style of watch). The way this dial catches the light is hard to describe in words. I often find myself looking down at this watch, admiring it, several times during the day.The exhibition case-back is a nice touch that lets you admire the mechanical workings of your cherished watch. Granted, the back could be construed as austere since there's no decorative gold plating/blue-screws or the such and you dont really see any of the jewels, but I think the simple, clean look of the stainless steel'ed back case really compliments the watch in many ways and makes it even more elegant. At a case diameter of 38 mm, thickness of 11 mm, and lug-to-lug length of 44 mm, this watch sits perfectly on nearly any wrist and is the PERFECT size. I am a 6.5" wrist and I could not be happier with the dimensions of this watch. Very comfortable and natural size, perfect mix of declaring its presence but also staying appropriate, unlike the enormous, bulky, ridiculous size watches that unfortunately comprise a large portion of the market. The lug width of 20 mm also make it very easy to swap out straps or bracelets, and doing so really gives you so many options for the SARB033. This watch is a strap MONSTER. It plays well with just about anything you can imagine. I have mine on a black alligator (Hirsch Duke embossed) with an after-market deployant clasp, and it really elevates the watch, making it look more refined. Leather straps look FANTASTIC on the SARB033, instantly giving you a worthy dress-watch that looks more expensive to the eye (one very experience watch seller at a boutique commented that he thought my watch looked like an IWC at first glance). Of course, you could easily pair the SARB033 with a NATO, perlon, or metal bracelet, and go for a more sporty look. The watch lends itself to any occasion or dress-style.The one area that I would describe as a negative is the included oyster bracelet, which actually has fairly good quality, but in my opinion just looks a little off for the watch. It's comfortable enough but at times feels a bit stiff and the micro-adjust is also nearly nonexistent. I am very happy with my leather strap replacement. In sum, the SARB033 is a fantastic option for anyone looking to get an awesome automatic, and it offers incredible value and quality for your money. I loved mine so much that I bought a SARB035 too. Having one of each basically gives you everything you could ever want for a time-piece, between the black and cream-colored dials, and the myriad of strap options that are out there. Don't hesitate to pick this one up, you will not be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, not perfect, but awesome for the money
Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2019
I've had my SARB033 for a few months now and thought I'd share some observations. I was very lucky to snag one a few months ago when Amazon briefly had a few of them at pre discontinued prices. I absolutely love the quality for the money, the size, the design and overall style and look of the watch, starting with the lovely shape of the case and the clean simplicity of the dial. It's super easy to read the exact time to the second. Its casual dressy look that looks great with jeans and a tee shirt as well as a suit make it the perfect everyday watch suitable for anything except diving or other hard use situations that might result in it getting beaten up. But it's perfect for my everyday use and I really love the look and feel of it.

I do have a couple of minor complaints: I wish the sapphire crystal had anti reflective coating, wish there were more micro adjustment holes on the clasp, and wish the clasp fit more flush to the band so there wasn't such a large gap along one edge of the clasp (shown in second photo). But the rest of the watch is so great for the cost that these minor issues mostly related to the clasp design are pretty easy to live with. And the clasp is still solid and secure. In other respects the bracelet is quite well made with very nice fitting solid end links.

It's the first automatic watch I've used on a regular basis for over 20 years. Most of my other watches are high accuracy battery powered quartz (or regular accuracy solar quartz) and it took awhile for me to learn how to get the best accuracy out of the Sarb automatic watch. I thought it might be helpful for others if I go into a bit more detail about this.

When I first got the watch I wore it 24 hours a day and started using a free app called watchcheck (highly recommended btw) to keep track of the accuracy. Under these conditions it was initially running about 5 seconds a day slow. Now I know this is supposed to be fairly good for a mechanical/auto movement powered watch but after coming from quartz I wasn't especially thrilled with these results but was prepared to live with it as it was within specification and somewhat expected. Then one day the watch started running about 30 seconds slow. A few days later I woke up to find the watch had completely stopped. Fortunately, after hand winding it started right back up. I concluded from this that I was likely not active enough to keep the watch adequately wound using just the movement of my wrist and decided to start giving it about 15 hand winds each morning. The accuracy immediately returned to running about 5 seconds slow per day, again while wearing the watch 24 hours per day.

Then I decided to experiment with taking the watch off at night to see if I might achieve better accuracy. First I tried leaving the watch dial up on my night table while I slept. Accuracy improved to about 2 to 3 seconds slow per day vs the 5 seconds slow I was getting before. That was encouraging. Then I tried leaving it dial down on the night table while sleeping and amazingly (to me at least) accuracy has improved to about plus or minus 1 second per day (and sometimes even better, but over a week or so it averages out to a little less than a second a day). I was and continue to be just thrilled with this. So my routine is now to remove the watch at bedtime and leave it dial down as well as to hand wind the watch 15 or so turns each morning before I put it on for the day. So far this has resulted in the amazing accuracy (for an auto) I indicated above.

So for some of you who are experiencing less than optimal accuracy (especially if running slow) I think it might be very worthwhile to try some hand winding to keep that mainspring powered up and experimenting along the lines outlined above to see if your accuracy might also be considerably improved simply by adjusting your usage pattern a bit to compensate for some of the positional timing variation issues that are inherent with mechanical movements.

Update 7/9/19
Still loving the Sarb033. Finding it difficult to give any of my other watches any wrist time since I got the Sarb.
Accuracy over time has fluctuated a bit, but over the past 6 months or so it's been averaging about 2 or 3 seconds per day slow which I'm very pleased with.

Update: 1/5/2020
Accuracy has declined to an average of 8.5 seconds slow per day.
