Our Heritage

The story of Seiko began in 1881, when a 21 year old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. Just eleven years later, in 1892, he established the 'Seikosha' factory.

ss

Seikosha was founded; started producing wall clocks.

In 1892 Kintaro Hattori bought a disused factory in Tokyo and Seikosha was formed (In Japanese, "Seiko" means "exquisite", "minute" or "success" and "sha" means house). It was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first clocks and these marked the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the important manufacturers of timepieces.

The Legacy Carries On

When, in 1913, Seiko built its first wrist watch, the company’s president called it the Laurel. It was not only a first for Seiko, but also a first for Japan and it was the beginning of a tradition of innovation that resulted directly from Kintaro Hattori’s determination. Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori’s company is still dedicated to the dreams that the founder always strove to achieve.

The gossip is true, I also received a returned ... Update (02.03.2020)
Hi everyone and yep, I think the gossip is true. I'm not sure but I think this is my first review ever on Amazon but I really think I need to do so and it will be a looong one, so bare with me. First, I bought the watch from Amazon as recommended by some one in a watch forum. He stated that Amazon was the best bet at receiving a true SARB017 and not a fake, grey or black market item since they are Seiko approved dealers but it had to be specifically "Fulfilled and Sold by Amazon". That way warranty related issues would not be a trip to the seventh ring of hell. I finally had a chance today to hop over to the post office and pick up the watch, an SARB017 - Seiko Alpinist. I think it had been there since Sat, Dec14 (today is Thur 19). Happy to be the proud owner of the mythical Alpinist but at the same time afraid that I might be another one of those that would end up writing a bad review like some others that had a bad experience. I quickly got home, opened the brown Amazon box and there it was, the Alpinist. I had bought just this item to prevent its box from getting banged up with other stuff inside the same shipping box. So I carefully pulled off the white sleeve and opened the plain black and white box, a little underwhelming considering its the Alpinist. Then I also carefully removed the white box top, there it was, the watch of legend, the glorious Alpinist around a black velour pillow that made it really stand out. Never having actually seen one except from reviews and pics I was stupefied. After a few minutes of just admiring it and letting the feverous enchantment wear off came the "now let's get up close and personal" to inspect the watch. Be positive, be positive rattled in my mind. Right off the bat I saw that the usual transparent, sticky, plastic protector that is supposed to be over the sapphire crystal and bezel was not there, hmmm... Interesting, OK, let's remove the watch from the pillow and further inspect it. The warrany card and instruction booklet are there, good. Oops! the tag fell off, it was not looped onto the strap but just pinched between the strap and pillow. This is not good... the protector that is also supposed to be on the screw down cover is also missing. A chill ran down my spine. Now, this calls for pulling out my trusty magnified specs, the 10X and 15X loupes just for kicks. Let's play make believe watchmaker. I could not find any scratches, not that they were not there, I just couldn't find any. I will perform a closer inspection under appropriate lights tomorrow. What I did find was some residue that, after performing a makeshift CSI on the watch, I conclude was leftover adhesive of some sort, probably from the non existent protective covers, see the pic, the specks that look look like drops of dry something (I took the pic when almost done cleaning). I innocently (that's the right side of my brain pushing it's opinion), thought that after production ending Feb last year (from what I've read and seems to be generally considered true) and having the protective cover on for a year or more under who knows what environmental conditions, would very probably leave some type of residue on the contact areas. Now, the left side of my brain comes into play and whispers in a rather dominant voice saying, "don't be naive, THIS IS A RETURNED ITEM SOLD AS NEW... AND YOU FELL FOR IT!!!". With deep frustration I went for a swab and a clean microfiber buffing cloth to wipe the watch over. All the residue did come off and I couldn't find any stains or marks left. Now let's give this some thought. Why would an Amazon employee remove all the protective covers when that would defy the purpose of the plastic sticky things and expose the watch surfaces to being scratches from all the banging it would receive during shipping? What makes me think that someone took them off after receiving the watch and returned it for whatever reason. Most people don't carefully put hose things away or return them to the watch, they just toss them aside. One point for the "returned item" theory. Next I noticed that the watch didn't start beating after all the cleaning and moving it around. OK, innocent me again... stored for how long, in an unknown environment, drying lube inside and what ever else could add to it... Sooo, I carefully try to hand wind it with an unsettling no-start. This is getting scary... The left side of my brain pulls out a hand and slaps me across the back of my head saying "WAKE UP!!!". let's wind the Seiko automatic way, the pendulum arm movement. Still no start, then I unscrew the crown and pull it out one click, There it goes. I set the date and start the watch at the 8:00pm mark, before what would be it's midnight time setting and wait for it to change the date. At the time of writing this dissertation it seems have the date moving to the next number. This watch is a first for me with so many scary things going on. I honestly think Amazon sold a used or returned watch as new (at a price that is very expensive considering it selling value back in the day), well at least an opened box watch as new and had me pay for it as new. This is "no bueno", they should at least say "opened box item", that way expectations are not so high. I was the type of guy that would blindly buy from Amazon when stated as "Fulfilled and Sold by Amazon". Not so much now. Trust is one of the hardest things to keep in todays world and once you lose it, it's even harder to get back. I will have the watch under observation and see how the patient continues to behave. I'll most probably take it to a watchmaker and have its beats thoroughly timed and see how it ticks out of the box leaving it as is, It's not a skeleton back so I'll just have to trust what's said to be inside. Hopefully I haven't been bamboozled and this is a true SARB017 Alpinist inside and out, never really used and just opened box. Let's see. I'll keep you guys posted with anything new.Update (02.03.2020)Hi all, again. This is an update to my original review, it includes changing from 3 to 5 stars. After the watch to a watchmaker friend I am very glad to say... Yes, the watch I received is the real McCoy! I am including some pics of the internals of the open piece. He also confirmed that the watch was manufactured with two different dials for model numbers, 00E0 and 00E1, laying that to rest also. For now I have regained my trust in Amazon and items "sold by and fulfilled by Amazon". Although I must recommend that they include product info related to the item description mentioning if it is new, was a return, open box, scratch and dent, etc., of course this would also require a price appropriately adjusted to the item condition. This would really reduce the psychological grievance of receiving something expected to be new but is not technically new since it has been fiddled with and/or is missing tags, labels, etc. even if it is in perfect working order and visually mint. Any way and overall, I am very pleased with the watch. I am not one into green dials (this is only my second green dial watch) but this one is really spectacular specially in the sunlight where it really turns into an eye catcher. For some reason gold and green seem to hit that visual sweet spot for me. Have fun buying and good luck!!

The actual looks of the watch is amazing. Most parts of the watch case are polished, while the front of the lugs are brushed. The dial displays different tones of green at different lighting angles. The strap needs to break in, as it’s too tough and feels weird when you wear it for the first time. Happy to be able to still own one as it’s already discontinued and most sellers are asking for high prices for existing stock.
