When it comes to pens, if you’re anything like us you can’t settle with just any old plastic ballpoint. You expect and deserve more from your pens - much more. Our 30,000 square foot manufacturing facility is located in Boulder City, Nevada, where our products are both hand and machine tested, so you can write confidently with the knowledge that your Fisher Space Pen will never let you down!
The Fisher Military Pen
Fishers Pressurized Cartridges:
The secret behind the unique capabilities of our pens lies in the ink cartridge itself. Our refills are hermetically sealed, pressurized with nitrogen gas, and feature a tungsten carbide ballpoint tip - the same extra hard metal that is used to make armor-piercing ammunition. No longer relying on gravity to write, our pens are able to function at any angle, even upside down!
- Writes in extreme temperatures from -30 F to +250 F
- Writes underwater and over wet surfaces. Writes at any angle- even upside down.
- Each Fisher Space Pen is precision assembled, hand tested, and carries a lifetime promise against all manufacturing defects
Facts and History of the Space Pens:
The story of the Space Pen really begins with its inventor, Paul C. Fisher. Before he took to making pens, Paul worked in an airplane propeller factory during World War II. It was there that he gained valuable experience with ball bearings, knowledge that would come in handy down the road for creating ballpoints. He later went on to invent the 'universal refill' ink cartridge, which in turn led him to create the first 'Anti-Gravity' pen, patented in 1966. Although it is a popular misconception that NASA invested millions of dollars developing an anti-gravity writing instrument, the fact of the matter is that Paul had been working on the design for years and had invested roughly $1 million dollars into the pens development . Truth be told, in the beginning Fisher didn’t even set out to create a pen specifically for the astronauts; he was simply looking to make a great pen that worked without leaking. In the end he had developed what he considered to be the perfect pen – a pen with ink that would not be exposed to air, rely on gravity, leak or dry up, and that wrote underwater and in extreme temperatures. His breakthrough happened to be perfectly timed with the space race and he offered the pens to NASA for consideration. Two years of testing later and the Space Pen was approved to accompany the Apollo 7 astronauts into space. Despite the old joke that the Russians solved their anti-gravity writing problem by using pencils, Russian cosmonauts actually began to carry Fisher Space Pens on their missions as well, at about the same time that NASA did.
In order to prevent leaks from the gas pressure, our ink has to be thick, thixotropic to be exact. Fisher ink is actually more of a gel than a liquid when it is at rest, with a consistency similar to that of toothpaste. It is only when pressure is applied to the ballpoint that the ink will take on the spreadable properties of a liquid, while still retaining the stickiness needed to adhere to nearly any material.

If you like to take notes or write on a sofa or in bed, they are terrific because they write at every angle that you might try are skip free and the ink seems to last almost forever. If you've ever tried to write on a piece of paper or journal laying down and holding it up to read, you'll know that normal pens require gravity to be in the "right direction" to work. (I also occasionally use one to mark lines on the ceiling, which I need to do every once in a while, when I move a light fixture or curtain track.)
They are well made and usually not flashy if a bit expensive. If you can manage not to lose them or loan them out to someone, they seem to last forever.
As to how easy they are to hold, it depends on the model. Some are a bit slippery, others are very easy to hold.
The ink flow is not as smooth and ink-heavy as I was expecting based on other reviews; however, it is certainly adequate and flows continuously without obnoxious starts and stops that leave gaps and force you to retrace letters. If you prefer really dark and heavy lines, more akin to what you would get from a fountain or felt-tip pen, this pen may write too lightly for you. The ink weight seems comparable to what you would get out of a common Bic disposable pen--with the key difference being that this one is pressurized to feed continuously and thus, will not run out when you write at a vertical angle or in cold weather. It also does not skip on semi-glossy paper the way that a disposable Bic tends to do (such as on restaurant receipts, which are often not very ink friendly). This pen seems to write on anything.
Given its slightly shorter-than-usual size (about 3/4 the length of a Bic disposable pen) and its very convenient pressurized ink feeding, this makes a superb travel pen to pair with a Moleskin journal. I carry them with me whenever I travel away from home, since I often find myself wishing for a pen and paper to write down my thoughts or to leave a quick note for someone.
All in all, a very nice pen at a good value. I wish the pocket clip were a little more flexible like pens that have a flatter (and thus, springier) metal band for the clip. I also slightly miss the bolder look of ink from a felt-tip pen or some gel ink pens, but the upside here is that this pen's lighter ink flow undoubtedly means it will last much longer, and it also is so much more versatile in terms of being able to write at awkward angles or on awkward surfaces. Recommended!
This pen is built like a tank. You could probably run over it with one and it would look factory new. The difference in diameter between the exterior of the pen and the cartridge tells you everything you need to know about how much material is in the casing of this thing. This may lead you to think it would feel bulky in the hand, but the truth is, it really doesn't. As a matter of fact, it's actually one of the most comfortable pens I've ever used, and the tapered front end actually extends beyond aesthetics into ergonomics. It's capable of writing very quickly, and unlike some gel pens, it doesn't have that sticky feeling that accompanies cheap ballpoints. This thing will just go, and go, and go until you run it out of ink, which could take a while going on the size of the cartridge.
The cartridge deploys with a light but satisfying click, and is very easy to replace. The matte black finish is nice for those that just want a solid, nondescript, tank of a pen, and there are no identifying markings on the exterior of the pen. As long as they keep making the cartridges, this will continue to be my pen of choice, even for day-to-day applications.
