Please note that I saw YouTube vids of people melting these pucks into puck bowls. I wanted to do this but my stove wouldn't heat it up enough to melt. Another video showed a guy microwaving it into a bowl so I tried that too. Oh boy, was that a mistake. The puck expanded to about 2.5x its original size and turned black. Now, I'm out a lime puck. That's too bad because I'd really love to try it.
The Almond "puck" was a freebie with another purchase someplace else.
The Almond scent is quite strong but doesn't stick around too long or interfere with my cologne, which is rather nice since it's my least favourite of all shaving cream/soap scents, regardless of manufacturer. However, the soap itself is a great performer for the cost. It is slick and cushioning and to my experience, is a non drying OR moisturising product. It leaves me happy with what is achieved, and a thought that I may buy the brand again.
Onto the others shall we?
Col Conk Bayrum: The scent is very faint for a Bayrum but it lathers well, and it gives a slick shave with no irritation. I should point out that Bayrum is not as well known here in Australia as the United States, and we have to pay very handsomely for it. So, Col Ichabod Conk... (or "Ichy baby" to his closest friends) Quadruple the scent value and I'd be in virtual heaven.
Col Conk Amber: Although the scent is again quite faint, it was a difficult one to describe really. Medicine cabinet, pine needles, spices. Best described as reminiscent of Pears Amber bath soap, remember that stuff? (after reading another review and checking it out at my local supermarket, it is very very similar). All in all, a pleasant aroma and a good shave like the previous two.
Ever tried (I have) Geo.F.Trumper's "spanish leather" shave cream? Similar to but if not the same as Cussons "Imperial leather" bath soap, but on steroids? Beware fellas, beware.
Col Conk Lime: Definite citrus aromas here with hints of confectionery and bath soap. Slightly stronger in scent than the Bayrum or Amber, but not as strong as the Almond. Lathering, shave cushioning, is just the same as the others. A good scent for the warmer months, and very very enjoyable.
I shaved with each puck individually for a week straight, usually at least five out of seven days, just so I'd get to know how they would perform. A new DE blade was used each week (same brand also), with the exact same razor setting (Gillette slim H2 set at seven).
I've also tried to be impartial as I possibly could to other brands. My skin type is not sensitive, and my facial hair does not have all the properties of fencing wire.
PRO's are a slick shave which is what we all want at a good price. There's no need for any sort of balm afterwards to sooth my skin, although I do use an Alum block. After that, I use my cologne and I'm good to go.
CON's are this product is easily out-performed by a cheaper soap such as Arko, which is a tallow based soap, whereas Conk's is a glycerine based soap. Something to consider perhaps as to your needs or wants.
Col Conk in my opinion, offers a no nonsense, although basic approach, to a very
reasonable shave experience for the price. Happy to have it/them in my rotation.
Cheers to all
Steve.
EDIT DUE TO TYPO ONLY.
This morning I finally exhausted the old soap I was using and broke out the Bay Rum variety for a change. The slow lathering was still present, and the other characteristics I'd noted before. But, with the benefit of several years of safety razor use behind me, I noticed how well it lubricated the blade. It felt slippery on my face. I didn't need a lot of lather for it to work just fine. In addition, it was extremely easy on my skin. Most soaps are pretty good in combination with the safety razor, but this was pain and irritation-free shaving.
I think the safety razor is superior for my skin, and probably yours too. But look, shaving this way is a bit of an acquired skill and definitely an acquired taste. There's a way to do it right - post shower, take your time with the lather, pay attention to the "grain," rinse with cool-to-cold water, and use an after shave lotion that works for you. But this particular soap is really good, among the best I've tried, and I appreciate it more now because I have figured out what I am doing and have come to appreciate what this one brings to the table. Doesn't mean a beginner with the single blade won't like it, just that you may appreciate it more once you've been around the block with this old fashioned shaving method. The Lime was okay previously, think I may stick with the Bay Rum, the smell works for me.
