Regarding timepieces, I always had the view that a formal dress watch should always have a leather strap. I heard recently though from a couple of women colleagues that leather is for casual wear. Are they correct?

Leather is not for casual wear. A trim, quality leather band ( especially a black one) is more dressy than the ones that are made of metal. But it really comes down to the design of the bands – be it leather or metal.

    Antonio,
I absolutely love it that you encourage men to dress Black Tie! I have always felt that this dress is not hard to do, and once you do wear a tuxedo and receive many a raving compliment on it, you’ll never be scared of it again. Too many men for lack of better reasons use the Prom as their “Black Tie Waterloo” or similar feeling. That’s too bad, as men look absolutely smashing in a tux. Frankly, it’s the matchy-matchy syndrome that kills the idea. Read it: girl friend insisted I dress that way. No wonder guys run scared when a tuxedo is brought out.
My prom date was probably right on when she insisted that I wear a Black tux although she wanted me in velvet as opposed to regular, but we teamed it with a set of tux trousers and supported them with suspenders. I also wore a proper French Cuff tux shirt and velvet bow although in 1977 the bow was as big as a house! Still, I got more compliments on the whole suit than many of the other guys did that night and folks were still talking the following Monday when we were back in school. In fact, they asked me why I didn’t decide to wear my tux that day. (I owned my tux as I belonged to an organization requiring we wear tuxedos to our meetings)
I think, sir, you will have cleared up a lot of mysteries and will convince many men that wearing a tux is not as bad as they remember. I know it does not feel like an evening at the Symphony without wearing tux nor does attending a Holiday party feel right in anything else. I may however not wear my tux to this year’s party as we’re doing pizza an that might get messy. So, I do hope you’ve cleared many misconceptions and that those men who’ve never tried it, will indeed make a go of wearing a tux this Holiday Season. Besides, can you think of a better time to wear one than Christmas Day? I can’t.
    Thanks, William wright

Hi, William! Thank you for sharing your story and feedback. I absolutely appreciate it. Happy holidays to you, sir!

Glad to hear that, Vladimir! Thank you!

Wing collars – familiar to most as the collar frequently worn with the tuxedo – consists of a short shirt collar with no turndown, and two small “wings” at the front which are tucked behind the bow-tie. These collars are reserved for formalwear, and the gentleman need not give them particular consideration unless morning or evening dress is required.

A wristwatch should have a quality leather band or a band of a nice metal. Buy the nicest watch that you are willing to afford – maybe that’s not platinum, but we can all afford to do a little shopping around to find a watch that’s within our budget, is simple and elegant, and expresses our own individuality and style well.
