This post is based on the video – $50 Vs $500 Watch
Gentlemen, Antonio here. Today, I’m going to be talking about the difference between a $50 watch and a $500 watch. I’m going to give you five things to look for so that you can make a smart purchasing decision.
Guys, the reason I’m talking about this is from the range of about $200 to under $1,000, there is – you can get a lot of watch for your money or sometimes you can buy a watch that you just simply bought a brand and it had a huge markup.
Guys, I want to make sure you go out there and you make a smart purchasing decision and you get the most watch for your money.
So, to start this off I always say a man is responsible for educating yourself. Go out there and join the forums, start talking to people that collect watches. Go out there and find information.
I’ve got a lot over at Real Men Real Style and in fact, the support article I go into and I’ve got a chart that breaks out all these information so you can just glance over it.
The key is you need to be able to make an educated decision, the only way you can do that is to better understand watches in general so that you’re not going out there and I just don’t want you to get ripped off.
So, tip number one. Craftsmanship. Pay attention to the time the effort everything that goes into the presentation to the entire watch itself. And, it’s one of those things if you have never held a quality watch, make sure to go into a really nice store, look at that watch that cost a thousand dollars, that cost a couple of thousand dollars, ask to hold it.
You’re going to see all these details you’re going to start to see what goes into a quality watch and then instantly whenever you hold a non-quality watch you’re going to know, hey, you know, this is – I can tell the difference. It’s one of those things that you want to feel that you want to touch it.
Now, I’ve got some samples here from the Melbourne Watch Company. They actually sent me two watches; the one I’m wearing and this one right here the Portsea, the one I’m wearing is called the Carlton. It’s a great company. One thing I really noticed was the packaging. So, as soon as I got the box, it came in a beautiful package that I know that they spent money on.
Then, I went and looked at the band, the overall, the stitching, the quality of the leather, the workmanship of all of the pieces. Very good. Then, I go look at the watch. So, I look first look at the backend, I see that it’s properly sealed I see they talk about the jewels. So, this watch right here is a mechanical watch. I’m going over and I’m looking at all the details from the casing.
Instantly the weight of it, it feels good. Those are it sound like small details, but put together they can instantly tell you that this is going to be a watch that’s well worth paying $500 for or this is one you want to pass on.
#2 Quartz vs Mechanical
Indicator number two. Quartz versus mechanical. So, let’s start off with mechanical. Mechanical does not mean it’s going to be the highest quality watch, but what that does tell me is it it’s got various pieces mechanisms within it, it’s spring-driven and it required a lot more effort to build up especially to work consistently.
Right there if I know of a watch is mechanical I know the price is going to drive up a bit. Again, this Portsea right here, it’s mechanical, it’s driven by a spring. Whenever you have motion here, it’s got a turner inside of it which is actually going to wind up the spring and that’s how it has the energy.
The other type is going to be quartz. Now, quartz does not mean necessarily it’s lower quality. This one right here the Carlton uses a quartz. Basically, it’s got a battery in there which is powering and basically sending electricity into a quartz crystal, hence why it’s called quartz. These are going to be more accurate, but they’re not going to require as many move basically as many pieces that are going to be moving.
The one right here that has the mechanical, that’s where the jewels fall in. And jewels are going to be used between metals so that basically you have less wear and tear. The key with a mechanical watch and why they are so priced and why they are so expensive is the history and all the details, it goes back to the craftsmanship versus something that’s going to be quartz, it can be – this is something that you can put in the least expensive the cheapest watches.
#3 Watch Glass Quality
So, quality indicator number three is going to be the type of glass that you’re going to find here on the face of the watch. So, you’ve got mineral, you’ve got acrylic, and you’ve got sapphire. And let’s start off with mineral. That’s the least desirable, it’s the least expensive, but it’s going to scratch and you’re going to find that on lower end watches. All of a sudden when we move up we’ve got acrylic and you will find acrylic on some lower end watches that’s going to be a bit more expensive. It’s definitely going to be more scratch-resistant.
Now, if we were to go up to the higher-end and that’s where you’re going to see sapphire. So, sapphire, I’m not talking true sapphire, I’m talking manmade sapphire and this is going to be resistant to almost all types of scratching. Basically, they use diamond to cut it and to shape it and it is going to be the most desirable, it’s also going to be the most expensive, hence why it’s on more higher-end watches.
#4 Quality Complications
Next, let’s talk about complications. And I’ve talked about this in other videos. But complications are going to be all those other little details; the chronograph, the telling of the month, the telling of the date, the telling of the moon phase.
If you’ve got these in a watch especially a mechanical watch, that’s a great indicator of quality. Oftentimes, you will pay more for those little details. If it is a plain watch and all it has is the time telling on there and it’s quartz and it’s using a mineral glass. Those are all indicators that’s a $50 watch.
#5 Smoothness Of The Movement
All right. The final indicator of quality I’m going to talk about is the smoothness of the movement.
So, when you look at the second hand moving on there, if it looks like it’s just moving seamlessly like there are no jumps between the movements, that is great. High-end watches you’re going to see usually about nine movements per second, so that pretty much you can’t even see them they’re going so fast and it just looks incredibly smooth.
As a watch drops overall in the quality, it all of a sudden starts going down to four maybe five maybe three per second which is not bad is not necessarily a negative indicator, but one thing you want to do is listen.
Can you actually hear the second hand? If you can hear the second hand oftentimes that’s perceived as being a bit lower quality. So, if you can hear the second hand if you can clearly see it, you know just slowly plodding it’s way along, that is not a good indicator, higher-end watches are going to have various movement.
That’s it. So, if you’re in the market for a watch in this price range, definitely go check out the Melbourne Watch Company. I’ve got two of their watches and I am loving them, I’ve already gotten compliments.
I wore this actually out to my StyleCon event and I had a guy that was wearing a Rolex come up and look at my watches. Actually, we took them off and we compared and I got to feel his and it was funny because here is a guy with a $10,000 watch and I thought the differences were really very small.
And, that’s one thing you’re going to notice as you start to go up in quality of watches. It’s kind of like the Law of Diminishing Returns. I asked him guess the price and thought about $1,000. I smiled because they were quite a bit less than that, but, again, go check them out, Melbourne Watch Company, good company.
And, guys, if you want more information, go check out all the watch information we’ve got at Real Men Real Style. I want you to educate yourself so that you can make the smart purchasing decision the right decision for you and you can have a watch that whenever your time’s up or whenever you passing these things on your kids, they’re fighting over it, they’re like, oh, yeah, I want that watch. That’s pretty cool and you’ve got like an heirloom piece like this.
That’s it, guys. I’ll see you in the next video. Take care.
