Hacking Jacket (n.)
A tailored and well-fitted jacket usually made from tweed. A hacking jacket was originally used as a horse riding jacket.
The cut and vent of the jacket allowed for optimal coverage of the rider while not restricting the movement of the rider’s torso and arms.
The pockets of the hacking jacket are usually patch pockets or slanted to be easily accessed while on horseback.
What we call a hacking jacket today is rather a well-fitted sports jacket tailored with characteristics of a traditional hacking jacket.
